      The egg. Thinking about it in evolutionary terms, eggs have been around for much longer than chickens (or even any bird). Birds only evolved as a sub-group of dinosaurs in the last 65-70 million years or so (and chickens far more recently). On the other hand, eggs have been around for almost 1000 million years (many insects and other animals have eggs too), so the egg definitely came before the chicken.
