This is a difficult question: there are many theories about how and why we dream! But what most scientists agree on is that when we sleep, we process what we saw and experienced during the day.
Dreaming could be a part of that, of brains organising our experiences, which we don’t yet understand. Or it could just be a by-product – in that case, it’s not sure that we are *supposed* to dream; it might be that it just happens!
