• Question: Is being a scientist just about sitting in a lab in a white coat? Or are there other types of scientist?

I’ve hardly worn a white coat in my time as a scientist. Only when I’m doing experiments in the lab (which mostly involves poking caterpillars), and most of my work is computer based. There are also other scientists that spend most of their time out in the field working with animals (or whatever else they study) and so no white coats there either. Science and scientists are as diverse as you can imagine, difference people studying different things will do it in a different way.

      Hi Katie!

Like other computer scientists, I don’t need to wear a lab coat and safety glasses – there’s no chance of accidentally getting a bit of “computation” on my clothes or in my eyes 😉

Scientists can have very interesting lives! There’s a famous mathematician, Paul Erdös, who used to travel the world, literally living out of a suitcase! He just wanted to work with as many other mathematicians as he could!

In general, I guess for most scientists, computers are becoming a larger part of the work, and they do fewer experiments. This is because computers can do simulations, but also because you can use them to look at old experiments in new ways (since so much is now digitally accessible).

      Hey Katiemcgorryy!

Whats wrong with a white coat? I love mine! and wear it every day whilst I science! haha!

As the others have said, there are many disciplines that would never wear a lab coat, and I feel sorry for them as they never get to feel awesome power it beholds!

      🙂
